Modern vs. Contemporary Furniture Styles for Your Home

Though the words are often used interchangeably, they are decorating styles with similarities but also distinct differences that make each unique. To understand what each of these styles encompass, we must look at their origin stories. Follow along as we explore two of the most popular furniture and design styles in the 21st century.

Origins of Modern Design & Furniture

The Modern style began at the time of the Modernist movement in the late 1800s. The name the “Modern” style it is actually ironic at this point, as the roots of the style are getting quite old but it surely was modern at the time of its creation. The design style focuses on simplicity and functionality per the discretion of some of the movement’s original influences; the German Bauhaus and Scandinavian design.

Origins of Contemporary Design & Furniture

The Contemporary style we see in many homes now first became popular in the 1970s and originated as a combination of several different styles before it was recognized as its own entity. The styles that influenced the creation of Contemporary Design included Modernism, Deconstructivism, Futurism, and many more.

Similarities Between Modern & Contemporary Styles

Both styles show simple designs with smoothness, clear lines and clutter-free spaces. In both types of furniture, pieces such as chairs, sofas, and ottomans have exposed legs as opposed to many styles that prefer not to show them. In general, both Modern and Contemporary styles prefer clean, reflexive surfaces for furniture pieces and countertops.

Difference Between Modern & Contemporary Styles

Modern furniture and style tends to be a much more classical, structured system while there is more room for flexibility and creativity in Contemporary pieces. Contemporary is often described as stark and even cold while Modern styles are rarely seen this way. Modern pieces tend to stick to natural, neutral color schemes while Contemporary is much more open to colors and curves.
