3 Reasons Why Your Mattress Choice is Important

Simmons Mattress

Sleep is one of the most overlooked parts of our lives. And yet it is one of the most important, accounting for roughly 30% of our entire lifetime, and is a large determinant of how well we think and perform throughout the day. There are several factors that play into the quality of your sleep, such as stress, thoughts, and the activities you did throughout the day. One of the biggest ones, however, is your mattress. The surface you sleep on has a tremendous effect on your body, and plays a major factor into the quality of sleep you get. Here are 3 reasons why you should think carefully about what mattress you should choose.

Reduced Stress

Mattresses are associated with a soft feeling that envelops your body, but did you know that there is a positive correlation between a firmer, more supportive mattress and a decrease in stress? In a 2009 study, a small test group of 59 men & women slept for 28 nights on their regular mattresses, and another 28 nights on their new mattresses. They were asked to evaluate their stress levels based on factors like worrying, racing thoughts, nervousness, irritability, headaches, trembling and more. The end result was a noticeable decrease in stress, largely associated with the change in supportability.

Relieving Aches & Pains

A bad mattress can make your existing problems with your body worse, as well as form new ones. When you lie down in a particular position for long periods of time, any imbalances formed from the downward gravity and upwards resistance of the mattress can misalign your body, forming pressure points. Oftentimes this can lead to soreness, aching joints and poor posture. Back pain, hip pain, and neck pain can all be attributed to sleeping on a bad mattress.

In contrary, a good mattress will provide you proper support and encourage healthy sleep posture, supporting your spinal curvature in all slumber positions. Good cradling will ensure that your weight is distributed evenly and remove undue stress on any body part. This, over time, can relieve or minimize chronic aches and pain.

Improved Quality of Life

By this point, it is clear that a good mattress can have a profound difference in your quality of sleep. But how exactly does it affect the rest of your life?

The answer is by a lot. A good night’s sleep that allows you to go through a full cycle of your circadian rhythm can result in memory, performance, and productivity increases, making your whole day more easier and enjoyable. Other benefits include a better metabolism, which helps prevent weight gain, and improved moods, allowing yourself to be more optimistic and happier throughout the day.
